Speaking at The American Legion's 92nd National Convention in Milwaukee, Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley said that providing for airmen and their families will continue to be the service branch's "bottom line." He said it was "not only the right thing to do for our airmen, it is the smart thing to do for our Air Force."

HAMPTON -- Anyone passing by American Legion Post #35's hall at 69 High Street in Hampton has likely seen some changes taking place on the patch of lawn in front of the building.
That's because preparations are being made for the installation and eventual dedication of Post #35's Global War on Terrorism Memorial Monument.

METOC Ensures Weather Is Not A Guessing Game

USS KEARSARGE At Sea (NNS) -- Aerographer's mates (AGs) aboard amphibious assualt ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) are critical for mission success.

AGs aboard Kearsarge provided crucial forecasting and analysis of the weather while the ship conducted daily operations during Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX).

The crew of the Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) shop aboard Kearsarge is responsible for collecting, recording and analyzing meteorological and oceanographic information. AGs make visual and instrumental observations of weather and sea conditions, prepare up-to-date weather maps and oceanographic data, and provide weather forecasts and warnings.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. George W. Casey Jr. braved snow and bone-chilling wind Dec. 21, to speak to the Soldiers of 1st Armored Division about their role in their upcoming deployment to Iraq and how the Afghanistan troop surge will affect it.

He emphasized that their role and that of other units under the leadership of Gen. Raymond Odierno, Multinational Force- Iraq commander, will assist and advise the Iraqis as they continue to secure their own nation.

Casey has traveled around the world in the past couple of weeks, including visits to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. During one visit to Soldiers of 1st Cavalry Division, who 1st Armored Division will replace, he seemed pleased by what he saw. "I was amazed with the commitment and zeal the Soldiers currently deployed to Iraq exhibited," Casey said. "We have a seasoned Army that is committed to its mission."

Helicopter Protection Enters New Era

The Defense Department is kicking off a program to design, build and demonstrate prototypes of the Joint and Allied Threat Awareness System (JATAS) to protect U.S. Navy and Marine Corps helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft from dumb and smart weapons.

The two current competitors are Lockheed Martin and the team of Alliant Techsystems (ATK), BAE Systems and Goodrich. The teams were awarded two 16-month Navy contracts.
